Super Bowl Sunday is one of the biggest events in the sporting world today. On February 2, 2014 two teams will participate in the big football game and will be sporting the Nike swoosh on their jerseys, pants and possibly their cleats. That swoosh has made an impact on many generations, down to a lot of clothes and shoes I wear today. There is more behind the slogan of “Just do it,” and the swoosh symbol though because Nike hasn’t been around forever. Nike has great roots along with, believe it or not, ties to farming in some of their materials that build their product. These great roots and materials have turned their apparel into an attractable asset.
Nike originates from the Greek word meaning “victory,” who breathed its first breadth when two men had a vision. This vision pioneered an industry in clothing and apparel. Nike’s roots weren’t hard to find because the company was started by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight. It all started in 1955 at Oregon University where Bill Bowerman was the track and field coach and Phil Knight was a very talented runner on Bowerman’s team. Both of them focused on how to make athletic shoes faster, lighter and sleeker by tearing other shoes apart and selling their own product out of the trunk of a car. It wasn’t until the 1970’s that Bowerman and Knight teamed up and took the leap making the birth of the Nike brand possible.
With the birth of the Nike brand came an innovation in products which over time have become more attractable. Nike is especially attractable in their shoes because of their sleek design and light weight. Anymore a pair of running shoes weighs an average between 6 to 10 ounces which 40 years ago that weight was 13.4 ounces. Nike’s top volume materials used is; polyester, rubber, eva-form, cotton, synthetic leather, leather. Many of these products wouldn’t be without farming. Examples include, leather which comes from tanning an animal rawhide and skin which is normally from cattle or cotton which come from sheep. So in essence, without farming, Nike wouldn’t have some of their top volume materials to use in the products they sale.
Products from Nike is and will continue to be in high demand in clothing and shoes. Bowerman and Knight have built a well known company that is used worldwide. When you hear “Just Do It,” you think of Nike and now I will also think of victory which refers to the Greek meaning of Nike. I will forever thank Bowerman and Knight for the chance to wear attractable apparel and shoes. My knowledge for the importance of farming has grown as well, because with farming companies are able to take materials and make a product for us to wear along with providing us with food.
